What a Wonderful Week in Room 2!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

This week we read the story The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Have a listen here.

We sequenced the story using picture cards. Some of us had the chance to retell the story while looking at the picture cards.

We can sequence the story all by ourselves.

Scarecrow

A scarecrow came into our class last week. A scarecrow stands in a field or a garden and frightens the birds away. That way the birds won't eat the lovely plants and vegetables growing.

We have work to do to make our scarecrow look and feel better before we put her out in our Secret Garden. We need to ask our mammies for old clothes to give her. One girl already brought in a hoodie that her mammy doesn't want. Thanks!

Wait until you see our scarecrow next week! We will give her a name, a new face and dress her up.

Rainbow Fish

We read the story The Rainbow Fish.

We made rainbow fish using tubes, scraps of paper and crepe paper ribbons.

Writing

We learned to write the letter s.
You start at the dot and bring it back, bring it forward and bring it back.
Make sure he's nice and fat!

We also did another sentence in our writing copies.
We can go up the hill.

Number 5

We have the number five and sets of five up on our wall.

We found sets of 5.

We are learning to write the number five. We say this rhyme.
Down and around
and then you stop,
Finish the 5 with a line on top.

Click on the picture to listen to the Story of 5.

We like to sing the song 1,2,3,4,5, Once I Caught a Fish Alive

We played a game where we threw a dice and then had to make sets of that number.

Fun Day

We had Fun Day today. It was a fantastic day! We had so much fun playing lots of different games . We took part in different stations. Ms. Fox played parachute games with us. Ms. O'Connell used beanbags with us. We played  playground games with Ms. Gavin. We took part in lots of races with Ms. Kelly and we played with the hula hoops with Mr. Hennessy! We loved everything! After big break we drew pictures of our Fun Day!

Perfect Painting, Terrific Tasting and Wonderful Writing!

We painted more animals this week. We painted wild animals.

Taste

We explored our sense of taste. First we talked about our tongues. Some of us can roll our tongues. Some others can touch our noses with our tongues.

Then we looked at each others tongues.
We use our tongue to taste. We talked about tastes we like and tastes we don't like. Teacher brought in different things for us to taste.

We tasted natural yogurt. This tastes sour.

We tasted salt and vinegar crisps. They taste salty.

We tasted lemon. This tastes bitter.

We tasted chocolate. This tastes sweet.

Book Fair

The book fair came to our school this week. On Tuesday we went to the hall to have a look at the books. We saw lots of books we liked. Teacher read the book Superworm to us.

Have a listen to the story here.

When we got back to class we wrote I like to read and we drew a picture from the story Superworm

Have a look at some of our work.

Ms. Kelly and Ms. Gavin picked a winner. Isn't this fantastic?

The winner won a free book from the book fair. Well done Sam!

Writing

We learned to write the letter o.
You start at the dot and go all around like a c and close it.

We learned to write the letter e.
You start at the dot and go straight across and around like a c.

We also did another sentence in our writing copies.
I can make a car.

Sight Words 2

We have learned ten more sight words.

To introduce each word I read a story which contains the word on each page.

You can read these stories with your children. Ask your child to find the words they know.
Some stories are a pdf file from mothershubbard.com, others are in powerpoint.

All About Animals

We have had animals on our minds all week!

We read the story Noah's Ark. God told Noah to build an Ark so he would be safe during the flood. He told Noah to out two of every animal on the boat. Do you now see why we painted two of each animal last week? Have a look at this super display outside our classroom.

We listened and sang along to the song The Animals Went in Two by Two.

We also read the story How To Hide A Lion. It's a very funny story. We drew the lion in the story. Didn't we do a great job?

We have learned two new animal songs this week; One Elephant Went Out To Play and I Am A Terrible Tiger.

One boy brought in a tiger teddy bear. We sang the song where the boys pretended to be the tigers and the girls pretended to be the hunters.

We painted farm animals this week. Some of us painted farm scenes while others picked one or two animals to paint. Teacher says we are fantastic artists.

We had to sort animals into where they live for our cutting activity in the morning. We cut out the animals and stuck them either in the forest, desert, sea or polar regions.

We played Animal Homes in class on the Interactive Whiteboard. We had to match the animal to where they live. Click the picture to play.

We learned a little about the elephant this week. The elephant is the biggest animal that lives on the land. He is grey and heavy. He has a long nose called a trunk. He can suck up water through his trunk and then he squirts the water into his mouth to drink. He has two tusks that grow from his mouth. They are very big teeth. He has large floppy ears. Elephants eat plants.

We say this elephant rhyme.

An elephant goes like this and that,
He's really big,
And really fat.
He has no fingers,
And has no toes,
But goodness gracious,
What a long nose!

We listened to this silly song.

Writing

We got new copies this week. These copies have lines on the pages!
We did a lot of writing this week. Have a look at some of our writing. We are trying to remember to sit our letters on the line. We also do our best to remember that we put a finger space between words when we are writing sentences. We are certainly improving!

Number 4

We were writing the number four this week.

We say this rhyme.

Down and over
And down some more
That's the way
To make a four.

We made sets of four in our copies.
