Vehicles, Vehicles Everywhere!

Travel and Transport is our theme this week. We sing Down By the Station everyday. We know some rhymes about vehicles. We say Writing on the Railway Train, Piggy on the Railway, I Had a Little Engine and Here Comes the Big Red Bus.

We talked in detail about the car, the train, the aeroplane and the boat. We drew these vehicles in our copies. We tried writing the words too. We did a great job. We are getting so good at writing.

We made sailing boats using lollipop sticks and cloth. We have them up on the wall outside our classroom.

We sorted vehicles depending on whether they travel on water, the road, tracks or in the sky. We each got a picture. We told the class about our vehicle and then stuck it on the board in the right place.

We drew more vehicles when we had the writing box activity in the morning.

There was an Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe

We learned the rhyme There was an Old Woman who Lived in a Shoe. We had to work together to sequence the rhyme.

We turned shoes into houses. Have a look. We had to draw a door, windows, a roof and a chimney to turn the shoe into a house.

Capacity

We continued playing with water in the morning. We practiced filling things up and emptying them.

We had to fill up the glasses with strawberry milkshakes. Now they are full.

We had to colour the empty objects.

Writing

We learned to write the letter r this week.
You start at the top and go straight down to the line, you go back up, near the top and bend it over.

Room 2 are Number 1

Number 1

We learned about the number one. We know a rhyme to write the number one.

Number one is like a stick
A straight line down
That's very quick

We learned a song called One Little Finger. We love singing along to it.

We circled sets of one in our books and made sets of one in our maths copies.

There is a display in our class showing the number one and sets of one. Look at our perfect patterns too!

We made a rainbow 1 and wrote 1 in our copies.

Capacity

We are playing with water basins in the morning. We love filling the bottles up and emptying them out again! We count how many jugs it takes to fill a bottle.

Writing

We learned to write the letter g this week.
You start at the dot and go all around like a c, you close it, you go down, down, down under the line and kick it back.

Gaeilge

We were on the television this week! Rocky Rua has a TV and some of us had a turn being interviewed.

Rocaí Rua: Dia Duit. (Hello)
Páiste: Dia is Muire duit. (Hello)
Rocaí Rua: Cé tusa? (Who are you?)
Páiste: Is mise ... (I am ...)
Rocaí Rua: An maith leat milseáin? (Do you like sweets?)
Páiste: Is/Ní maith liom milseáin. (I like/do not like sweets.)
Rocaí Rua: Go raibh maith agat. Slán (Thank you. Bye)
Páiste: Slán. (Bye)

We also talked about the TV shows we liked.

An maith leat Fireman Sam? (Do you like Fireman Sam?)
Is maith liom Fireman Sam. (I like Fireman Sam)
Ní maith liom Fireman Sam. (I do not like Fireman Sam)

Valentine's Day

Today is Valentine's Day. We made love bugs during the week to give to the people we love.

In the morning teacher showed us a song she remembers from a TV show when she was a little girl. The song is called Skinnamarink. She said some of the mammies and daddies might remember it!

Other Activities

Here are some more photos from play-time during the week.

Have a great mid-term break everybody!

Science Week in Scoil Mhuire

This week is Science Week in Scoil Mhuire. We had three science workshops during the week. We had three different teachers for each workshop: Ms. Fox, Ms. Kelly and Ms. Gavin. We were so lucky!

On Tuesday  Ms. Fox played Pass the Parcel with us. We learned about different materials. We had to identify and sort different papers, plastics and cloths. We passed around a giant parcel. When the music stopped, whoever was holding the parcel had to take off one layer. We had to identify if the layer taken off was paper, plastic or cloth. We got a prize at the end. To keep the jellies we had to tell teacher what material the jellies bag was made of. We said plastic. We were right! It was great fun.

On Wednesday Ms. Kelly came into our class. We did an experiment with her. We had to find out which ball was the bounciest. We tested all the balls by dropping them and counting their bounces. We completed a chart showing the results. Can you figure out which ball is bounciest?

On Thursday Ms. Gavin came to visit. We did another experiment. We put raisins into a glass of water. We saw the raisins sink to the bottom. We then put raisins into a glass of 7 Up. The raisins started dancing! They kept moving up and down in the glass. We realised that 7 Up has bubbles while water doesn't. The bubbles make the raisins lighter and makes them float to the top. When they get to the top they lose their bubbles and sink down again. This keeps happening. It looks like they are dancing. We recorded the results in our copies.

Science is so much fun!

Saving Water

Scoil Mhuire is a green school. We do our best to save electricity, energy and water in our school.

We are going to save water when we flush the toilet. We can put a bottle in the cistern. This takes up space and stops the toilet using as much water when it is flushed.

The big girls in sixth class did an experiment to see what bottle would be the best to put in the cistern. They came to our class and showed us. This great girl brought in the perfect bottle.

We put the bottle into the cistern.

We save some water every time we flush the toilet now.

Terrific Teddy Bears

On Friday we brought our favourite teddy bears to school.

We all introduced our teddy and said one thing about them. A lot of us like to play with our teddies and cuddle them.

Some of our favourite teddies were busy so these six children minded teddies that live in our classroom.

We sang I Have a Small Teddy and Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear to our teddies. They loved it!

Watch the video for Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear.

During the day we had PE. We had to leave our teddies in the classroom. When we came back one of the teddies had done a bit of writing. Have a look!

She wrote the letter d, our new letter this week. It is fantastic writing!

In the morning one of our teddies hurt his leg and had to go to the doctor.

The teddies even helped us with some work during the day!

We loved having our teddy bears come to school with us.
