"Eggcellent" Work in Time for Easter!

Last week we showed you some of the houses we were making. Now we have them up on the wall. Don't they look fantastic? We made a village!

Here we are working very hard!

Can you name the rooms in this house? We can tell you what we do in each room.

Rocaí Rua calls the sitting room the seomra suí.
He calls the bedroom the seomra leaba.

We played in the kitchen (or cistin) again this week. We made magnificent meals and super snacks.

We built houses like the three little pigs. We used straws, match sticks, lollipop sticks and bricks. After we built the house we tried to blow it away like the big bad wolf!

Easter

We read the Easter story this week. Easter is a happy time because Jesus rose from the dead.

We made Easter bunnies throughout the week.

Writing

We learned to write the letter p this week.
You start at the dot and go straight down, down, down under the line, you go back up near the top, bend it over and close it on the line.

Maths

We used number fans during the week. We had great fun using them. Teacher blocked a number on a number line and we had to show her the missing number using the number fan. We also played a game where beads were dropped into a tin. We had to count how many were dropped into the tin and show the number on the number fan.

Enjoy the holidays everyone!

Sight Words 1

Sight words are commonly used words that young children are encouraged to memorise as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words in print without having to use any strategies to decode them.

So far we have learned ten sight words.

To introduce each word I read a story which contains the word on each page.

You can read these stories with your children. Ask your child to find the words they know.
Some stories are a pdf file from mothershubbard.com, others are in powerpoint.

Our Visit to the Secret Garden

We must be the luckiest boys and girls. Our school has a secret garden. We visited the Secret Garden today. We brought seeds to sow and three pots of herbs to plant.

We are not going to tell you how we got there! John was in the garden waiting to help us plant. Thank you John!

We were taking care of some herbs in our class - Sage, Roman Chamomile and Black Peppermint. We have moved the herbs from the pots into the secret garden.

John had to dig holes in the herb wheel.

Once they were big enough we pulled the herbs out of the pot and put them in each hole. We put soil back in the holes to secure the herbs.

Here we are at work.

We planted the other half of the daisies from India in the flower bed. We marked the place in the bed using the packet of daisy seeds.

We look forward to coming back to the secret garden to keep an eye on all we have planted.

Keep up to date on all the planting in Scoil Mhuire by visiting the School Garden blog

Planting Fun in Room 2!

We had a great day today. We listened to the story Jack and the Beanstalk.

Jack sold his mum's cow for some beans. Jack planted the beans. And some magic happened!

Today we planted some seeds, just like Jack!

We planted a type of daisy from India. This is the packet.

We filled the window box with soil.

Look how tiny the seeds are.

We sprinkled the seeds on top of the soil.

We gently mixed the soil using our hands.

We don't need to water the seeds yet as the soil is quite wet.

We drew pictures of planting the seeds. Take a look at some of our work.

Houses and Homes and a Whole Lot More!

We are learning about different types of houses. So far we have learned about a two-storey house, a bungalow and an apartment.

Some of us have painted houses on white paper.

Some of us have made houses using cardboard boxes.

Next week every child will have created these houses. Wait until you see all these houses displayed in our classroom!

We read the story The Three Little Pigs. Have a listen below.

We are playing with the kitchen in the classroom in the morning. Rocaí Rua calls this "an chistin."

Spring Walk

We went on our spring walk this week. We looked out for the signs of spring. We looked for flowers growing, buds on trees, leaves growing out from the buds, nests in trees, chicks in nests, baby animals and the animals that have woken from their long sleep.

Look at what we saw on our walk.

The convent gardens are so pretty this time of year.

We drew some pictures of our walk.

This girl drew a picture of a nest and eggs when she had the writing box. Didn't she do a great job?

Writing

We learned to write the letter b this week.
You start at the top and go straight down, down, down to the line, you go back up to the middle, bend it over and close it.

Number 3

We have the number three and sets of three up on our wall.

We learned the rhyme The Three Little Kittens. Have a look at the video below.

Other News

One boy brought in shells to show the class. He went to the beach last weekend and collected six shells!

On Friday at assembly Ms Burke-Heneghan gave certificates to the boys and girls who were in school almost everyday since school started back in September. NINE boys and girls from Room 2 were called out! Well done us!
