Doctor, Doctor...

We had a doctor's surgery in our classroom all week. We had turns playing the doctor, the nurse, the receptionist and the patients. It was great fun. Have a look at us at work!

We learned about doctors and where they work. They can work in a hospital or a doctor's surgery. They help make people better when they are sick. We had a look in the doctor's kit. We talked about the stethoscope, the blood pressure monitor, the syringe and the thermometer. We drew pictures of doctors at work.

We also learned the counting song Five Little Monkeys. In the song Mammy has to call the doctor!

Ladybird, Ladybird

We learned a rhyme about ladybirds. It goes like this:

Ladybird, ladybird
Fly away home
Your house is on fire
Your children are gone
All except one
Her name is Ann
She hid under the frying pan

We made ladybirds during our cutting activity in the morning.
We coloured the ladybird's body black.
We drew black spots on the wings and them coloured the wings red.
We cut out the body and the wings.
Then teacher stapled the wings onto the body.

We also made ladybirds using paper bowls and paint.
First we painted the bowls red.
The next day we painted the black stripes and spots onto the ladybird.
The last day we used white paint for the ladybird's eyes and mouth.

Here is our class display based on the Ladybird, Ladybird rhyme. Can you find Ann?

Some other ladybirds are crawling in other parts of the classroom. Have a look!

Writing

We learned to write the letter a this week.
Start at the dot, go all around like a c, close it and go straight down with a kick.

St. Brigid

This week we learned about a special lady called St. Brigid. She lived a long, long time ago. We heard a story called Brigid and the Butter and another story called Brigid and the Cloak. Here is a picture of St. Brigid's cloak. It's very long!

This is St. Brigid's cross. When we see it we think of Holy God and His love for us.

We learned a song about St. Brigid called We Sing a Song to Brigid. We sang the song at assembly on Friday. We were fantastic! All the children and teachers in Scoil Mhuire were so impressed!

We coloured a picture of St. Brigid and her cloak. We used lots of different colours and made sure to do our best colouring.

St. Brigid's day is Saturday the 1st of February. St. Brigid brings the spring.
Happy spring everybody!

Praying

Deacon Séamus came to visit us on Thursday. He told us that he is going to be a priest soon.

We showed him how we say our prayers. He asked us to ask our mammies and daddies to teach us to pray at home too. We think of the people we know and love when we say our prayers.

Feeling Happy

We looked at a picture of a present and we imagined how somebody would feel if they got that present. We said excited, happy, surprised, glad and pleased!

We then drew what we would like the present to be. Here are some we drew.

Supermarket Sweep, Fantastic Firefighters and Wonderful Writing

We created a supermarket in the class this week. We all had a turn acting as the shopkeeper and the customer.

Painting

During playtime we had a painting table. It was our first time using four different colour paints at the same time! We only had one brush. We learned to wash our brush when we wanted to change colour.

We were all very good at keeping our palates a mix-free zone!
Have a look at some of our paintings.

Big and Small

We explored the topic of big and small. We divided our counting bears and connecting camels based on size. We found the big ones, medium ones and small ones.

We played some big and small games on the Interactive Whiteboard. Here is a game about three bears. We didn't get a chance to play this one in class yet!

We cut out leaves and sorted them into big, medium and small.

Firefighters

We learned about firefighters this week. We looked and responded to pictures of firefighters at work. We named the fire engine, the fire station and the hose. We saw a picture of the fire station in Tallaght. Some of us had been there before.

We drew pictures of firefighters. We did a fantastic job!

Writing

We started our formal writing this week. We learned how to write the letter c.

We sit properly in our chairs with our two feet flat on the ground. We hold the crayon in our writing hand and we hold our other hand flat on the copy so it does not move when we are writing.

On Monday we made a rainbow c in our writing copies.
You start at the dot and go all around to make a c.

On Tuesday we completed two lines of the letter c in our writing copies and on Wednesday we finished the page in our writing copies.

On Thursday we did the page about the letter c in our writing book.

Hot and Cold

We discussed hot and cold. We talked about things that are hot and things that are cold. We looked at pictures. If we thought the picture showed something hot we walked over to the red page with the word hot written on it. If we thought the picture showed something cold we walked over to the blue page with the word cold written on it.

The next day we completed a worksheet. We had to colour the cold things blue and the hot things red.

Happy

We talked about feeling happy this week. We sang the song If You're Happy and You Know It. Have a listen.

We read the story Everyone feels... Happy. We talked about the children in the story and why they were happy. We thought about times we were happy. We thought about the things that make us happy. We learned that happiness is catching so we are going to pass a smile whenever we can!

We made happy masks and we put them up on the windows in our classroom.

Playtime

Here are some other pictures from playtime this week.

Beautiful necklaces were made with beads. We saw more fantastic writing from the children using the writing box. Pictures were created using the box of shapes. Children worked together to complete jigsaws. Constructions were made using the straws.

We had a very busy week!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

We have been talking about winter all week. We sing our winter songs, Snowman and Winter Clothes, every day. We say the rhyme Five Little Snowmen.

Winter Walk

On Tuesday we went on a winter walk around the school and convent grounds.

We looked up into the trees. In winter the trees are bare, they have no leaves. We noticed that not many flowers grow in winter.

There weren't any nests in the trees. Winter is too cold for baby birds. The birds will wait for warmer weather. Some animals are hibernating. This means they are sleeping through the winter until spring time when the weather gets warmer and food is more easily found.

We saw some evergreen trees and leaves. There is ivy on the wall beside our school. We were so happy to see something growing!

When we came back inside we had a worksheet based on winter. We had to colour the winter pictures and put an X on the pictures that do not belong in winter.

Keeping Warm in Winter

We are very lucky to have a "fire" in our classroom. Fires keep us warm. There are other ways to keep warm in winter. In our houses we can light a fire, the stove or turn the radiators on. Some houses don't have a real fire but they might have an electric fire. In bed we can use a hot water bottle or an electric blanket.

One day we looked at the different things we put in the fire. We can use wood. turf and coal.

We can wear our warm clothes: hats, scarves and gloves. Here we are sequencing a girl dressing for snowy weather.

Jack Frost

During the week we read the story Jack Frost. Jack Frost comes in winter to spread frost and ice around our homes. We drew pictures of Jack Frost and his friends.

Spider Cakes

We continued our love of spiders this week. In the mornings we made spider cakes. We used plain cupcakes, chocolate fudge icing, liquorice and mini smarties to make them. We all had a taste of the chocolate icing before we washed the knives. It was yummy!

Incy Wincy Spider

We sequenced the rhyme Incy Wincy Spider.

Birthdays!

We had two birthdays last weekend.
Happy Birthday you two!
